Each year the FSGSO organizes and hosts an academic conference. The first, in February 2010, saw 15 scholars, 5 moderators, and the filmmakers Ted Hope and Prajna Parasher descend on Pittsburgh for two days of panels, two screenings, and two keynote addresses – broadly on the topic of Thinking Inside the Box: Encounters, Clashes and Strange Symbioses of Art and Industry. In October 2011, twenty-six scholars, or nine panels, visited to discuss Battlegrounds: Sites and Sights of Conflict.
